Bio

The soprano, Chinese classical dancer Runyu Feng from Hangzhou, China, is currently based in Essex County in New Jersey. She is currently studying at John Cali School of Music at Montclair State University for a Master of Music in Classical Vocal Performance major.

As a singer, she graduated from New England Conservatory as a Classical Vocal Performance Major in 2022 summer with a Bachelor of Music degree. She finished her high school at Walnut Hill School for the Arts as a classical voice major. She sang with Chicago Summer Opera as Cissie Woodger in the fully staged opera with orchestra Albert Herring, Frasquita in Carmen’s Cards trio “Melons Coupons” and Mrs. Fiorentino in “Are you Sure, Mrs. Olsen” from Street Scene. During her study at NEC, she performed in the undergraduate opera program as Valleto in the 2020 winter, she has sung in two departmental voice recitals and seasonal choir concerts. She has played the character “Cora” in the fully staged premiere opera Fallen Fairies in WHS, other roles she has played include “Rose” in The Finishing School, “Elizabeth O’Hara” in Sing On! while in WHS, “The first spirit” in Magic Flute’s finale while in Boston University Tanglewood Institute for young artist program in 2017. Besides the opera productions and concerts, in 2019, she participated in Lee Mingwei’s “Sonic Blossom”, an art installation project as an understudy soloist at Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, in Boston. 

As a Chinese classical dancer, she started her dance training at ChuLing Dance Academy in Boston, MA in 2018. Her dance performance venues range from Chinese cultural festival performances in museums and schools to larger stages like Performances at Boston World Trade Center. Besides, she has completed foundation Ballet I and II in Boston Ballet (2022), and has performed as “Court Lady (Countess role)” in both “Swan Lake (2022 spring)” and “Sleeping Beauty(2023 spring)”. Recently, she performed 醉清波 “Rippling Water” Chinese classical dance in an AAPI community performance on July 15, in New York City. Last spring, she worked with Qizhen Lu from Hong-Yu Dance Studio in Tianjin in creating a dance-vocal piece that combines Chinese classical dance and the Bel-Canto style of Chinese classical art songs.

It is her great passion to be part of cross-cultural art in committing herself to the togetherness of the art, as well as looking for her own individuality.
